'Tui Nature Reserve' in the Marlborough Sounds

Tours from Havelock or Elaine Bay - Duncan Bay - Penzance.

 

This tour and accommodation experience offers the best of the Marlborough Sounds. A real treat for the bird and nature enthusiast alike.

 

We start the first day at 10.00 am in Havelock Marina or 11.00 am in Elaine Bay - Duncan Bay - Penzance. Enjoy a beautiful boat cruise through the bays, coves and waterways of the remote and isolated Outer Pelorus Sound. On the way we will stop to spot marine wildlife like the Little Blue Penguin and the Fluttering Shearwaters.

 

After a lovely lunch at a local waterfront restaurant we visit the Gannet colony in Beatrix Bay and cruise all the way to the mouth of the Outer Pelorus entrance where the very rare King Shag colony breeds on Duffers Reef. Then we head to Tui Nature Reserve where you will have a ride with the Kawasaki Mule people carrier up to the Conservation Park 180 metre above sea level, imagine the views!

 

Your eco-cabin is comfortable with a half open kitchen, the views are truly amazing! You can enjoy your dinner with a glass of wine, while watching the Weka's in front of the cabins. In the evening there is enough time for a walk to see the sun set.

 

The second day we start after breakfast with a guided walk on the reserve. Brian will show you what fourteen years of conservation work can do and how the eco system of the forest is getting restored. Including a walk amongst the 900 year old trees like Rimu and Matai, and other Sounds natives like broadleaf and Beech trees. Great for bird watching; view the Wood Pigeons, Tui's, Bellbirds and of course the tame Weka (NZ non flying bird). We set up a breeding programme for native lizards such as the Marlborough Green Gecko and a bird enclosure with Red Crowned Kakariki.

 

Lunch will be with your hosts, the Plaisier family, after that we will be cruising back to Elaine Bay and/or Havelock passing the Common Spotted Shag. You will be back at about 3.00 pm in Elaine Bay or at 4.00 pm in Havelock.

 

To run this tour from Havelock we need a minimum of 6 people. To run it from Elaine Bay, Duncan Bay or Penzance we need a minimum of 4 people. The maximum amount of people is 9.

 

To make the tour nothing but enjoyable we only go out with reasonable calm weather.
