Predator fence fundraising
After winning the Marlborough Environment Awards 2009, Tui Nature Reserve enjoyed a lot of interest and this biodiversity project is growing rapidly and developing into a community project.
The last few years we worked hard, with the hand of many volunteers and the input from DOC, MDC, QEII Trust, private and company sponsors to reach our ultimate goal, the release of native species that have dissappeared from this part of the Sounds because of te loss of habitat and the presence of introduced predators.
In partnership with DOC and the input from scientists we are looking at the release of species like Robins and Kakariki. Our own breeding facilities will be very important to sustain this programme.
Following are the conditions to make a start with the bird-release:
1) Restored habitat and a high profile predator control and monitoring scheme on the 160 hectare peninsula (scientific research shows the huge improvement regarding this condition).
2) The creation of ponds to establish a good access to a water supply. With the help of donations this is only a matter of time and the first ponds are finished.
3) The creation of a diverting / restricting predator fence in the neck of the peninsula. This fence is combined with a solar powered electrical fence and is a total of 1000 meters long.

Red Stripe – proposed restricting / diverting predator fence
White Markings – rat grids / monitoring lines
Red Markings – breeding enclosures
Purple Oval – bird ponds
Light Blue – Blue Penguin nesting boxes
Red Dots – Stoat traps
Yellow Dots – Wild Cat traps
Green – Possum trap lines
The cost of this fence is estimated at $30 per meter, and we have secured in total 835 meter. We are still looking for funding of the last 165 meter fence.
The economy has forced a lot of companies to run a tight budget (like ourselves). However, we are dealing with the decline of wildlife in this part of the Sounds and feel that fast action is needed and any meter counts as it is speeding up the release programme.
All donations will be mentioned on our website.
